Are you a sheep?

Marine Corps Moms has an excellent post about people who are sheep and those who are sheepdogs and then the few wolves we have in society.

I have long said most people are like sheep they need someone to lead them. Not in a derogatory way, however it is still a fact. This article was especially good because it talks about how each of us have a choice to make. Are we going to live like a sheep or be a sheepdog.

The DNN frustration

I have been looking at the DNN portal since the 2.1.2 version has been released and have been impressed with the framework. While I have also looked at the rainbow portal I like DNN better. I don’t like rainbow for the main reason that its URL’s are ugly. It has a whizzbang internationalize module but dang the urls are totally crappy.

THe one frustrating thing about DNN (or any software really) is when it appears to be easy (read simple) to use and yet the desired results are not achieved. For example, I uploaded some skin files and while they appear in the drop down box I can’t apply them as I’m told there are no skin files. GRRRR they were uploaded successfully but they don’t work.

Well I’m going to keep plugging along and see if I can’t get this working. I would be happy to move away from the GCN (GotCommunityNet) as the development seems to have stalled, not to mention the MS backing of DNN.

Why should I self-educate?

“Formal education will make you a living; self-education will make you a fortune.”
-Jim Rohn

I have often times though about my reasons for not going to college. It always boils down to something in my inner being not liking the idea of sitting in a classroom for 4 years only to come out, learn the job yet again. But I believe the real reason is summed up in the quote above. College doesn’t teach one how to make a fortune, it only teaches you how to make a living. I never have wanted to just make a living. Sure I’m doing that right now but my dreams and goals have always been to make a fortune. So I have taken the path of self-education.
It is a pity our society doesn’t place a higher value on self-education.

I really need to fix the email problem

I got another comment on my blog.. WOW two so far, this is great. ;)
There is a small problem however in that I haven’t been able to get the email feature of .Text working. I guess I’ll have to break down and code a handler for the aspNetEmail component I have access to. The problem with is I’m not sure how to go about adding the functionality.*sigh* another project with no time.

The reason for writing down dreams

I have heard it said that one should write down their dreams. A few people in the Christian world have the ability to interpret dreams and it was in this context I heard about writing down one’s dreams. I came across the reason to write the dream down no matter how little you remember.

The best way to remember dreams in detail is to start writing down whatever you can remember from your dreams just as you wake up before the memory slips away. Do this every day and over time you will remember them in great detail.
from phil’s comment on http://www.businesspundit.com/archives/001391.html

Interesting information. I was getting discouraged due to not being able to remember my dreams even after writing them down. Not only that but many of them didn’t make sense when I wrote them down. I think I may have given up too early and will make an effort to keep writing my dreams down.

Snake dreams…

Over the last couple of nights I have had dreams about snakes. In all the dreams there was a huge dislike for the snakes and the effort to kill them. I don’t remember any of the details but I do remember being amazed at the feelings I had during the dream and after I woke up.

I normally hate snakes anyway, and get spooked by them. I think it has something to do with the fact that I figure they will bite me and some of them are rather poisonous and I don’t want the pain associated with a venom bite.

Blogging for the sake of Blogging

Â

Have I finally become addicted to the blog?? I asked myself that question as I have over the last few weeks felt the urge to blog just to have something posted to my blog.

I’m sure there aren’t more then one or two people reading this thing as I have little to say and of that most of it is personal tid-bits from my life.

Blogging has always been a bit of a double edged sword for me. On the one hand I would love to shout from the roof tops the things going on and thoughts I have. Then on the other had I feel the apprehension about sharing such things for the world to see and go down in permanent record. (Yes there are places you can look to view snapshots of websites over the life time of the site.)

So where does one strike the balance? On what subject should I write? How general or specific should I be and how often should I post?

The other day I found a comment posted to my blog in the form of an advertisement. Upon initially reading the comment my blood started to boil, then I figured it would be the perfect opportunity to craft a decent reply. So reply I did. The one downfall of this blogware (.Text) is that the comment notifications don’t work. Even trying a hack around to use the System.Mail name space, still didn’t get things working and I haven’t had the time to figure out adding the email component (AspNetEmail) I use.

I must admit this post has turned out a little more beneficial for the reader then I expected. While I was forming the post in my head I asked myself of what benefit it would provide to the reader as I was initially going to just post a simple post for postings sake.

My daughter is graduating tonight!!

Amanda is graduating from Kindergarten to grade one tonight. I however am having a hard time with it. I mean my baby is growing up. Ok so maybe I’m not having that type of emotion gush from my soul. I’m having a hard time cause I don’t see the big deal in a kid going from Kindergarten into the first grade.

Part of this could be due to the fact that I never went to public school for grades one through 3. I had my fifth birthday in Sydney Australia and was then home schooled in the jungles of Papua New Guinea. The other part is probably because Canadians don’t make a big deal about moving from kindergarten to first grade as school has already started with kindergarten. I’m sure my feelings will change when I partake of the ceremonies this evening!

At any rate… I’m glad for Amanda. She did an excellent job in Kindergarten finishing in the top of her class and even moving into some first grade work in spite of being a year younger then everyone else.

Love for OneNote

I have used OneNote more and more to jot down ideas, formulate blog posts, etc. However one thing I wish OneNote had added into it was the ability to formulate a blog post, click a button and walla the post would end up on your blog.

I’m going to keep looking for the added functionality. Surely someone has already created this.
